What is the SRR?
The SRR (Student Research Rooms) is a study space available for all students from the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. It is also home to a variety of book collections belonging to the School. The books in these collections have been kindly donated by academics such as Professor Jim McMillan, who was head of the School of History and Classics, Professor Emeritus James Compton, lecturer in American History, and Professors of Humanities, Harry Chester Goodhart and William Young Sellar. These book collections have continued to grow thanks to a number of donations over the years.
Who works in the SRR?
The SRR is managed by the SRR Coordinator, Clare Wilson.
Undergraduate volunteers help to oversee and maintain the space. Their duties include checking out books, providing access to collections which are in locked cabinets, assisting with enquiries, and helping the SRR coordinator with shelving books and cataloguing donations. Each year the School asks for volunteers, so if you are keen to work in this lovely space and to learn more about our collections, look out for emails about volunteering!
Can I study there?
All staff and students of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology are welcome to use the Student Research Room (SRR) for study and consultation of the book collections. The SRR is on two floors (Rooms 2M.25 and 3.13) in the William Robertson Wing. There are printing facilities, computers and desk space.
The SRR is open 24 hours, 7 days a week for Staff and Post Grad students, as well as for those who have ‘Out of Hours’ access. For Under Graduates the hours are Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 18:00. To access the SRR, you will need to swipe your student card. Out of hours access requires you to use your PIN which you can find on MyEd. If you are unable to gain access, please email clare.wilson@ed.ac.uk or visit Reception on the ground floor.
How can I find out more about the books in the SRR?
The SRR is home to ten different book collections and has a large range of books which are useful for both undergraduates and postgraduates. To view the collections’ catalogue please see ‘Search our Catalogues’ on this blog.
If you would like to borrow a book or to consult any of the books behind glass doors, please speak to one of the student volunteers who are usually on duty between 10:00 and 18:00. If there is no-one available please visit reception, or email the Student Research Room Coordinator clare.wilson@ed.ac.uk
