This site shares teaching and learning practice around our experiences of creating and running a Level 7 (UG) hybrid course at the Reid School of Music (ECA), on Fundamentals of Music Theory. We have presented a virtual workshop session at the University’s Teaching and Learning Conference 2020, 11:15-12:15 on Thursday 25 June and below you will find both the resources for the workshop and recordings of our presentation. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, this conference was moved into an online format, making it a rich way for us to demonstrate our hybrid approach. We really did “walk the walk”.
Conference materials (in hybrid fashion)
* PRESENTATION SLIDES for download *
The session was delivered live as part of the conference schedule, but given we were discussing hybrid learning we also wanted to “walk the walk”, and share the session with colleagues across ECA and the wider University who were not be able to make it. We had created materials that you could be accessed before and after the conference, including the presentation slides as well as teaching content, videos, and interactive quizzes. We invited the use of a discussion board to ask questions and chat to colleagues before, during and after the conference to get the most out of the experience. However, this board is no longer active.
The Semester 1 course that we were discussing uses a ‘Diagnostic’ self-enrol Learn site to navigate student enrollment, which involves complex entry requisites. The site includes resources to help students decide whether or not the course is suitable for them as an elective. It’s this existing site that we have used to share the conference presentation and workshop materials.
Before the conference
The scheduled, live conference session was standalone – but we wanted delegates who signed up to visit the self-enrol Learn site beforehand, as we think that way you’d get the most out of the session.
Unfortunately as this is a live teaching resource, it was only available for a limited time and is no longer available as a resource for this blog.
How to enrol on the self-enrol Diagnostic course in Learn
On the day – Session K2, Thu 25 June 11:15am
Course Organiser, Dr Nikki Moran and Learning Technologist, Eli Appleby-Donald discussed their experience of creating and running this course and the rationale for its design. As with any significant teaching project, many people contributed! This project involved UG teaching and learning teams in Music, at IAD, and support across ECA.
For those who were unable to make the conference
You will find recordings of the session below.
