The Edinburgh Environmental Humanities network is now three years old, and before starting up our programme of activities for 16/17 we wanted to take some time to reconnect with each other and our current interests.
Often we have gathered to share our insights and explore new ideas in traditional seminar rooms and lecture halls and so for this meeting we wanted to do something a little bit different and get together to try a walkshop.
A walkshop is simply “a workshop conducted through walking”; “it retains the characteristic of gathering a group of people together to analyse and reflect upon a shared topic of concern, but in the case of a walkshop, the majority of the discussion takes place outdoors as the group moves through a landscape.” (Wickson et al 2014)
This event provides an opportunity to experience a short walkshop in Holyrood Park as we reflect on what we each bring to EEHN and the kinds of directions we’d like to see the network move toward. How can the EEHN support and inspire us in our work? We will walk, talk, listen and reflect, guided by some lightly facilitated activities.
Walkshop Schedule:
1.30 Optional brown bag lunch in the University Library cafe (George Square)
2.00 Welcome and introductions, before we walk to Holyrood Park, returning to George Sq area by 5pm.
The walkshop will be led by Osbert Lancaster, director of Natural Change Ltd and Hon Fellow, School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh
Practical information:
We will be walking gently over easy terrain, on paths and open ground. There will be no scrabbling or steep climbs – though it may be muddy or wet underfoot. This is not a test of endurance or fitness. Wear clothing and footwear suitable for the weather – bearing in mind we will be sitting still some of the time. We will advise you of anything you should bring after you register.
