PhD Experiences – Presentations by Dr Alex South & Dr Edward Christie

For our first lab session of 2024, we’re delighted to welcome PhD graduates Dr Alex South and Dr Edward Christie to the EEHN PhD Lab (10.30am, 23rd January, Paterson’s Land G44 – COL).

Alex South is a musician and researcher whose interdisciplinary doctoral thesis ‘Cetacean Citations’ (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, University of St Andrews) combines practice-as-research, bioacoustics, and ecomusicology. His research interests include the musicalities and cultures of other-than-human animals, especially whales and dolphins, and the ethics of working with field recordings. His music produced as a solo composer and in collaboration with others has been performed and broadcast nationally and internationally. You can read more and listen to Alex’s work here: https://alexsouth.org/

Edward recently completed his PhD in History of Art at University College London. His thesis, which is titled ‘Mobilising Post-War Eco Art History Against the Climate Crisis’, reimagines canonical narratives on post-war modern art and the environment in the light of recent critical discourse on ecology.

More information about Edward’s work can be found here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/art-history/people/phd-students/edward-christie.

Alex and Edward will be delivering short presentations on their research and experience of completing their PhDs. This will be followed with time for questions from attendees.

All interested PGR students are welcome and we look forward to some animated discussion after the session over coffee!
