Restitution and the Anatomical Museum Workshop
On the 31st of October from 3:30-6pm the Research and Engagement Working Group (REWG) in collaboration with the Centre for African Studies (CAS), will be hosting a workshop at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
This in-person panel and workshop event will engage with community groups, activists and scholars regarding the UoE’s Anatomical Museum. The museum holds one of the largest and most historically significant collection of ancestral remains, notably skulls, many from the UK’s former colonies. We will be reflecting on why such a collection exists, how it is linked to the development of racial pseudo-sciences, what efforts are being made to repatriate ancestors to back their communities of origin and what needs to be done to repair this history. The workshop will feed into recommendations to be submitted to UoE through the work of the REWG’s review.
Speakers:
- Debora Kayembe, Rector of the University of Edinburgh
- Zaki El-Salahi, lead volunteer on Edinburgh’s Sudanese Community Partnership
- Ruth Pollitt, UoE Museum and Collections Assistant
- Gaia Duberti, University of Edinburgh
- Nicole Anderson, University of Edinburgh
