Decolonised Transformations

Confronting the University's Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism

Category: Questionnaire Studies

Staff and students are invited to take part in a brief online questionnaire (completion under 20 minutes) to help us understand the present racial climate within our University community.
These surveys form part of a project called ‘Decolonised Transformation: Confronting the University’s Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism’, which has been commissioned to develop an academic report on the University’s historical links to slavery, colonialism and the production of racial science.

The two surveys are:
Questionnaire 1 asks questions to help us understand the current racial climate at the University. It is open to submissions from all University staff and students.
Questionnaire 2 is open to staff and students who identify as racially or ethnically minoritised, or who come from areas of the world that have been affected by European-led colonialism and enslavement. It asks questions about respondents’ experiences of racism.

All thoughts and experiences shared via these surveys will help to inform the project report, which will also make recommendations on how to address structural racism at the University.
Participation in the studies is voluntary, however the first 250 participants will be offered a £5 e-gift voucher.

This project is part of a University-wide Review of Race and History, which is set to make a series of evidence-based recommendations that will inform future University policy. The University has a commitment to ensuring that all students and staff, regardless of where they are from, feel welcomed, supported, included and safe where they study, work and live.

More information on each of the studies, including the support available to those who wish to take part, is available in the participation sheets for each questionnaire. Please click on the links below to read more and fill out one or more of the surveys.
