Commentary
- The alternation between major and minor harmonies has been deemed inherent to the musical character of the pieces, rather than a copying error. Another example of the alteration between major and minor harmonies can be seen in ‘For kissing, for clapping, for loving, for proving’ from GB-Eu La.III 487, the Rowallan Lute Book, p.25. Matthew Spring has suggested such features can be related to the practice of other instruments such as the harp (Spring, Matthew, The Lute in Britain: A History of the Instrument and it’s Music (Oxford: Oxford University Press,2001), 467).
