Science Council Professional Registration – Carolynn Cairns

Carolynn is a Research Technician in the Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences in the QMRI, BioQuarter. She kindly shares some thoughts on her experience of becoming Professionally Registered as a Registered Scientist (RSci)

After attending a seminar promoted through the Technician Commitment from the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) I became interested in becoming professionally registered through the Science Council.  The opportunity to receive sponsorship from a fund donated from HR and IAD at the University encouraged me to take the steps to begin the application process.

I have been working in scientific research for over 30 years in many research environments and becoming professionally registered opened up an opportunity to celebrate my skills and see the development that I have made over my career culminating in a recognition of my achievements.

Support from a workshop provided by the IST was useful to highlight the requirements for achieving professional registration and Val Gordon was so helpful in giving up her time to comment and give pointers on my application!  The different sections in the application allowed me to reflect on my strengths as a scientist but also pointed out areas that I would like to develop. With the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) element of the professional registration I have been able to explore the advances that I would like to make over the next year and have a planned itinerary of the courses that are open to me and areas of research that I would like to investigate.
