Science Council Professional Registration – Stuart Reid

Stuart Reid is a research assistant in Malcolm Dunlop’s Colon Cancer Genetics group at the IGMM. This is what he has to say on his Professional registration experience:

“I had been thinking of becoming professionally registered for a while. When the Professional registration fund was launched in Sept 2019 it gave me the impetus to do so. I have been a technician and then a research assistant in the University for 17 years. I must admit that I did feel that my career was beginning to somewhat stagnate. Going through my professional registration process allowed me to reflect upon all the knowledge, skills and understanding I have acquired over the years; when you are actually going through it you realise that it is a lot more than you think! It has also allowed me to identify areas of continuous professional development which would benefit me and allow me to perform better in my current role. Being awarded my RSci has reinvigorated my attitude, I feel I have a new zest towards my role as a research assistant. I also feel being awarded my RSci allows for my experience to be formally recognised and can be acknowledged by my peers.” I would recommend professional registration to anyone, especially any technicians/research assistants who have many years experience as it can help formulate a career plan.

Stuart Reid has worked in various technical roles since joining the University of Edinburgh in 2003, and is currently a Research Assistant in Malcolm Dunlop’s Colon Cancer Genetics group within the IGMM. He is a keen footballer and can be found getting involved in the local amateur football scene, as well as supporting the Technician Steering Committee’s work around the Technician Commitment where needed.
