Invitation to Join the Project Advisory Board – “Third Culture Kids’ Digital Environments and Mental Health”

As part of the eNurture funded project “Third Culture Kids’ Digital Environments and Mental Health” we would like to invite you to join an advisory board meeting. This meeting will take place via Zoom on 8th February 3-4.30pm (GMT).

In particular, the eNurture project aims to explore the following questions:

  1. How do TCKs engage and negotiate the interplay between online and in-person support networks?
  2. How do TCKs perceive the risks and opportunities of using digital technology, and how can these risks be minimised and the benefits enhanced?
  3. How do TCKs experience the relationship between their use of digital technologies and their mental health?

To answer this question, as part of the eNurture project we will conduct semi-structured interviews and focus groups with TCKs and relevant stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, school counsellors, and other professionals working with TCKs). We will also be distributing an online survey to gather quantitative data about how TCKs use and experience digital technologies.

The aim of the advisory board is to steer and actively guide the project, such as the interview and survey questions, and the recruitment process. The input of the advisory board is vital to make sure that the outcomes will be as representative as possible and of use for parents, schools supporting TCKs. The advisory board will comprise a small group of TCKs and stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, school counsellors, and other professionals working with TCKs). The advisory group will meet one to two times throughout the year.

If you agree to take part, you will be asked to provide feedback on some aspects of the research design, and the recruitment process. You are not obliged to be a part of the advisory group, and your involvement in the group is entirely up to you.

Welcome to TCK ART!

A very warm welcome to all TCKs!
TCK ART aims to foster a creative encounter to art making that places transcultural experiences at its heart. Key to the vision of TCK ART is to engage in creative expression and exploration within a safe and supportive space that values and promotes cultural inclusivity and diversity.

TCK ART shares the ideology of cultural pluralism, working together, supporting each other and promoting the work of other third culture artists. TCK ART also provides an online gallery to display TCK artists’ artwork. Monthly art workshops provide an opportunity to take part in “open art studio” events with a focus on your own project and/or themed events which may focus on creative writing, poetry, painting drawing, and expressive dance, to mention a few. You are also welcome to propose and facilitate art events.

TCK ART has been created by Laura Cariola as part of a public engagement event. TCK ART acknowledges and embraces the need for creative expression and exploration in all transcultural individuals, no matter what age. TCK ART also offers a way for artists with a third culture background to support each other and to share a virtual art studio.

What is the focus of TCK ART?
TCK ART is a space that:

  • celebrates the artwork of third culture artists
  • explores third culture experiences in a safe and supportive space
  • embraces a pluralistic worldview based on inclusivity and diversity
  • acknowledges everyone’s unique experiences and ways of artistic expression
  • is curious about the art making process
  • provides a supportive, fun, empathic and non-judgmental space
  • commits to raising awareness of third culture identities

“Where are you from?” Supporting the Wellbeing of Third Culture Kids

What’s on offer

Third Culture Kids’, families, teachers and school counsellor are invited to join an art event in collaboration with ‘Forces Children Scotland’ and the ‘Scottish Council of Independent Schools’. The audience will be able to explore their transcultural experiences through the use of the visual arts, such as drawing, painting and sculpting. The audience will be also able to engage in discussion and conversation to learn more about the transcultural experience from a psychological perspective. TCKs will also be given the opportunity to learn about the social science research process through engaging with a participatory research project, and become members of the Scottish TCK community.

What’s it about?

In collaboration with ‘Forces Children Scotland’ and the ‘Scottish Council of Independent Schools’, we will be hosting a hybrid-delivered art event. This event is for TCKs (<18 years) living in Scotland who are invited to take part in an in-person and online art activity to explore their transcultural identity and wellbeing using art (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpting). An online art exhibition will display the artwork, and generate conversation and awareness around the theme of identity and wellbeing within the TCK community. To facilitate open dialogue, TCKs, families and stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, school counsellors) will give a series of talks and presentations to share experiences relevant to the support of TCKs’ wellbeing. Through participating in this event, the audience will experience how they are able to positively contribute to the Scottish and global TCK community, and increase their sense of belonging.
