Things to do in Spring/Summer in and around Edinburgh
By Lauren, from Scotland, studying Politics
During the summer months, Edinburgh turns from a hub of student activity to a hub for festivals, big events, and music!
Beltane Fire Festival
Beltane Fire Festival is something that I’ve wanted to do in Edinburgh since I moved here but have never had the chance to. Every April 30th Calton Hill is taken over by fire dancers, parades and costumes, for an evening to celebrate the start of the summer season. Although it is filled with fire and summer vibes, bring layers, as the summer weather doesn’t tend to hit the capital until June.
Jupiter Artland
This year, I finally made it to Jupiter Artland, which is an outdoor art exhibition on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Without a car, it can be difficult to get to – but luckily the number x27 can take you right to the doors from Princes Street in under an hour. It is great to visit on a warm summer day, as it is all outside, and there is a nice cafe in the middle where you can grab coffee or lunch. It is also only open between the end of March and the end of September, so make sure you do not miss out!

Edinburgh International Book Festival
Whilst the Fringe is the most famous festival of the year, my favourite festival is the Edinburgh International Book Festival, where you can see and meet some of your favourite authors. In 2024, it took place at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and hosted authors such as Margaret Attwood, Dolly Alderton, and Alan Cumming.
Portobello Beach
While Portobello Beach is open year-round (it is a public beach after all) I am including it in my summer recommendations because, if I’m honest, a snowy, cold, Scottish beach during winter is not enjoyable. I’m not the type of person to take a dip or surf in the water, but even walking along, taking a picnic, or buying some food on the promenade, creates a lovely little seaside holiday only a short bus from the city centre.

North Berwick
Speaking of beaches, while this is a bit outside of Edinburgh, I would also recommend North Berwick for a beach day trip! The lovely seaside town has so many little shops and museums to explore, and you can get a train from Waverly throughout the summer or take the bus for free if you have a Young Scot card! I would recommend getting some fish and chips or ice cream while you’re there and soaking up the summer sun (although make sure to bring a jumper, as it is Scotland)!
Edinburgh Fringe Festival
And finally, this wouldn’t be a list of the best things to do in Edinburgh during the summer months without mentioning the Fringe Festival. Taking place throughout August, the city becomes a hive of activity during this time, as there are shows for just about everyone. In 2024 alone, there were around 51,446 scheduled performances! The number of events can be overwhelming, so I would recommend keeping an eye on deals, or looking out for performers, instead of scrolling for hours looking for events that catch your eye on the website. You can either go alone or with friends or family, and without a doubt, you will have an amazing time!
