Flexibility: the reason I chose to pursue an online masters

Reading time: 2 minutes

By Lola, from England, studying a Master of Public Health (Online Learning)

When I first began exploring masters degree options, I quickly realised I needed a programme that wouldn’t require me to step away from my career or uproot my life. Flexibility was non-negotiable. An online masters offered exactly that: a way to grow professionally while still showing up fully in my day-to-day responsibilities.

Why an online masters made sense

Two factors made the online format the right choice: flexibility and access. The ability to study early in the morning, during breaks, or late in the evening allowed me to maintain momentum at work without compromising academic progress. Also, the global learning environment enriched every conversation, exposing me to perspectives I wouldn’t get in a traditional classroom.

Time management tips that helped

Balancing graduate study with full-time work takes intention, but these practices made a difference:

  1. Treat study time as a fixed appointment.
  2. Break big tasks into manageable steps.
  3. Use short pockets of time well, reading a few pages or reviewing notes adds up.
  4. Communicate boundaries so others understand when you’re focused.
  5. Schedule rest to prevent burnout.

Studying online while working

One of the biggest advantages of online study is its adaptability. When work demanded more from me, I could shift my study schedule without falling behind. Learning became something woven into my routine, not a disruption to it. Ultimately, the experience proved that graduate-level education can fit into a demanding professional life with the right structure and mindset.

Building confidence through autonomy

Online learning requires strong self-motivation and organization. Over time, I noticed that managing deadlines, communicating proactively, and balancing competing priorities strengthened my confidence. These skills carried over into my job, where I became more decisive, more structured, and more effective.

Final thoughts

Choosing an online masters was one of the most empowering decisions I’ve made. It required discipline and consistency, but it also opened new opportunities and broadened my perspective. If you’re considering the same path, know that it’s achievable and deeply worthwhile.
