Things to do after an Open Day in Edinburgh

Student Bliss walking through Edinburgh street and turning round to smile at the camera.
Reading time: 2 minutes

By Bliss, from England, studying Psychology and Business MA (Hons)

So, you’ve just finished the Open Day. Now what? Before you leave Edinburgh, here are a few places I recommend you visit. The city has plenty to offer outside the university.

Explore Grassmarket and Old Town

Central campus is only a 10 minute walk from Edinburgh Old Town, so start your exploration in Grassmarket. Take a picture of the fake wisteria on the side of the Cold Town House and get a perfect view of the Castle. If this isn’t enough, head to Vennel Viewpoint and live out your one day dreams. The steps provide an elevated view of the castle surrounded by the old buildings.

From there, wander up Victoria Street and question whether it’s the real Diagon Alley (spoilerit’s much too colourful). Then make your way to the castle for great views of the Pentlands and the city skyline. On your way down don’t miss New College (School of Divinity) which gives gothic/Harry Potter vibes.

National Museum of Scotland

This one is a must. It’s free and has lots to see including Dolly the Sheep! You can even enjoy great views on the open terrace and indulge in some people-watching.

New Town and Stockbridge

If you’re in the mood to shop, head to St James Quarter or Princes Street for high street favourites. But if you’re wanting something more relaxed, hop on bus 29 to Stockbridge and enjoy the independent boutiques and charity shops. Make sure to grab a coffee and pastry while you’re there too (Lannan Bakery do some absolutely gorgeous baked goods but beware there might be queues)

Hiking adventure

Feeling adventurous? Hike up Arthur’s Seat close to Pollock Halls If you’re not up for the full climb, The Craiglockhart Hills offer a gentler route with equally stunning views. Near King’s Campus, Blackford Hill is great plus, you get a full view of Arthur’s Seat from afar.

Refuel yourself

You must be tired after all that? Before you leave make sure you grab some food or coffee. Here are my top three favourite places to eat:

Black Medicine

Nicolson Street. Great coffee with cozy interior makes sure to check downstairs for seating.

Thailander

Newington Road. Best authentic Thai food, I went here with my mum and even on my birthday, never a bad meal.

Union of Genius

Forrest Road. If you’re fancying a light meal of soup or chilli this café will not disappoint. Lots of options for veggie-lovers and fairly priced.

Kampong Ah lee

Newington road. Affordable Malaysian restaurant with a colourful interior.

Further out

If you’re lucky enough to be staying in Edinburgh for a few more days here are some extra recommendations to keep you busy.

Swanston Farm

Just outside the city on the edge of the Pentlands, this peaceful spot offers scenic walks and a chance to spot Highland cows. It’s a lovely way to see Edinburgh from afar and get some fresh air.

Leith

Stroll down Leith walk and visit the independent shops, colourful street art and port.

Portobello Beach

If the weather is on your side, hop on bus 12 and visit the sandy beach. While you’re there make sure to check out PortaLibri a cozy book/coffee shop where you can sit in the window and read.

I hope this guide has been useful and have a gorgeous time in Edinburgh
