Benefits of online learning

By Carl, postgraduate online learner

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how amazing online learning is. It’s fantastic that we can take courses and learn new skills from anywhere, without needing to step into a classroom. In this blog, I’ll share some of the benefits of online learning and why I think it’s so great.

Flexibility

Online learning has given me the opportunity to manage my own time. This flexibility has not only made it easier to manage my studies but also helped me to balance other commitments, such as part-time work and personal responsibilities.

Creating a personalised study environment is another benefit of online learning. I can set up my workspace in a way that maximises my comfort and concentration, whether it is my home, a café, or a library.

Time and cost saving

Studying online has been a money-saver for me. I don’t have to spend on commuting or campus meals anymore. Without the commute, I’ve got extra hours each week to put towards studying, working, or even just taking care of myself. It might seem like a small perk, but it helps me keep a healthy balance in my life.

Attending lectures from home has been a huge benefit, particularly during the cold winter months. Previously, the stress of catching the bus, dealing with traffic, and worrying about being late was draining and left me tired before the day even began. Now, with online learning, I’ve regained that time and energy. I can start my day more calmly and have extra time to get ready for lectures.

Global connections

One of the best parts of online learning is the chance to collaborate with people from all over the world. You’re not limited to just local perspectives; you can connect with classmates from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.

This adds so much depth to discussions and group projects because you’re exposed to fresh viewpoints and ideas that you might not have considered before. Plus, building these connections can really expand your network, which is a big bonus for both personal and professional growth!

Improving digital skills

Being part of an online program has helped improve my digital skills. I’ve become more comfortable navigating different online platforms, which has sharpened my tech abilities. These skills aren’t just helpful for academic purposes, they’re super relevant in today’s job market, where remote work is the norm.

The university also offers plenty of free digital skills courses, and these can be accessed online from anywhere in the world. I attended some of those, including Programming and Office 365 courses, which were very helpful for my learning journey.

Final thoughts

Overall, my experience with online learning has been amazing. It offers the flexibility I need while helping me develop important skills. It’s a rewarding journey that can enhance your personal and professional growth and get you ready for a future that’s becoming more and more digital!
