Exploring the cosmos: Top 5 space experiences in Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s allure extends beyond its mediaeval streets and iconic landmarks—it’s also a haven for space enthusiasts. Nestled amongst its historic architecture, the city offers a plethora of opportunities to explore the cosmos. For those who dream of touching the stars, Edinburgh provides a variety of activities that bring the universe closer. From hands-on experiences and educational societies to stargazing and aurora sightings in the city’s darker corners, there’s no shortage of ways to delve into the mysteries of space. Below are a few activities in and around the city that can help ignite your love for space!

  1. Endeavour: This student-led society is pushing barriers to building the first UK launched rocket. One of the few rocketry societies in the UK, they regularly recruit students to join various teams and are very welcoming to people from all fields. These passionate students regularly meet and work on different sub goals and represent the university at various competitions.
  2. Physics and Astronomy Society: The most commonly joined society amongst space enthusiasts, this society organises several activities such as pub quizzes and regular talks with academic staff. However, the biggest show stopper is the stargazing night it organises regularly. Despite the occasional clouds, the professional telescopes used allow one to clearly see the Moon’s crater!
  3. Edinburgh Scientific Research Association (ESRA): Keen to do research but unsure about where to begin? ESRA has got you covered with its wide subject areas and access to professors. Each year, the physics team takes on several interesting projects and presents their research at a poster competition. This is a good opportunity to explore new topics and meet like minded people too!
  4. Talks and events at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE): During term time, the ROE organises several workshops and talks that are open to all students. A good opportunity to dive into the research being done by your professors,
  5. Dynamic Earth: A interactive science centre and planetarium, this tourist attraction is a must visit for all! Located close to Arthur’s Seat, this enriching experience walks you through everything related to Earth including our place in this vast Universe. It also houses the ShowDome cinema allows for an immersive theatre experience like never before! A venue for several engaging workshops and events, it aims to inform the public about Earth’s journey from its very beginning in the cosmos.

Edinburgh, with its rich heritage and vibrant academic community, offers an extraordinary array of opportunities for space enthusiasts.
