We’ve made it. The long, cold winter days are behind us and lighter, brighter ones are here! It’s time to switch cosy nights-in for exciting evenings-out with friends. But if you’re bored of going to the same pub for the fifth week-in-a-row, then here are some fun ideas to bring something fresh to your plans…
The Jazz Bar
First up on the list is a much-loved classic. As Scotland’s longest-standing independent jazz venue, The Jazz Bar already has a strong reputation for providing quality entertainment. The low-light, laid-back setting is the perfect place to unwind whilst exploring new music. Their live music runs from early afternoon to late night, with groups changing every day. Tickets range from £6-£12 and can be bought on the door. Student prices are available for entry as well as at the bar. For full details on their daily listings and specific prices, check out their website.
Dominion Cinema
Next up is another classy evening-out option. The Dominion shouldn’t be mistaken for an ordinary cinema; as Edinburgh’s only independent picture-house, their focus is on delivering a unique and luxurious experience. From their roomy recliner seats to the gourmet hot-food, it offers a true taste of the high-life. It’s true that there is a premium price for their tickets compared to regular cinemas, and complimentary snacks are no longer included in the ticket cost. However, the experience as a whole is still unique, making it worth splashing a little extra cash on!
Monkey Barrel Comedy Club
This venue offers a diverse range of acts, including some of the most popular performers at Edinburgh’s famous fringe festival! Most events are ticketed, but on Monday nights the open-mic gigs are free to attend! The intimate setting provides good opportunities for crowd-interaction, as well as comfortable seats and a well-priced bar. The Comedy Club is ideal if you’re looking for a way to unwind and laugh-off the stresses of university life, being guaranteed to provide you with a memorable night-out!
Edinburgh University Salsa
Our final idea on the list is an event run by one of our very own Edinburgh University societies! The club offers several weekly salsa & bachata classes, which can be purchased on a class-by-class basis, which are cheaper for those with a semester membership. Once-a-month, the society also runs an entire night of dancing in their ‘Fiesta Latina’ event! The evening begins with Salsa and Bachata classes, which then merge into a dance-party with a DJ, continuing on into the early hours. If you like to boogie, you should definitely try this one out – a night of dancing with this lively crowd will leave you feeling truly energised!
