Dr Kim Moran-Jones, Senior Strategic Research Coordinator, introduces the concept of research culture

Abstract image of researchers contained within a lightbulbResearch culture is a relatively new term, but universities, funding bodies and REF2029 all now recognise its importance, and increasingly are asking for statements and evidence of our work to improve our research culture.

Investing in and nurturing positive research cultures are a responsibility and a key strategic driver for research excellence. UoE is committed to fostering environments in which research, researchers, and those that enable research, can thrive.

Research culture encompasses the behaviours, values, expectations, attitudes and norms of our research communities. It influences researchers’ career paths and determines the way that research is conducted and communicated.” -Research Culture | Royal Society

Research culture is complex and there are many actions, behaviours and processes that go into creating positive research cultures. In coming SCOPE editions, we will be trying to highlight the breadth and scope of what research culture encompasses.
