Promotion and regrading outcome letters have now been shared with all staff who applied in the most recent 2024/25 rounds of promotions and rewards. In total, 81 staff from the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine received promotions or regraded roles.
Academic promotion data
Academic promotions are considered on a number of different criteria, and applicants must demonstrate their strengths in a variety of areas. Applications for academic promotion are submitted in writing, supported by references and are considered by a panel.
The genders used in the overall data are “female” and “male” which is in line with current University of Edinburgh human resources data gathering practice.
In the 2024 to 2025 cycle, 67 of our academic colleagues achieved promotion from a total of 74 applications. Of these, 15 are made professor (grade 10). 5 of our new professors are women, 10 are men. The remaining 52 people promoted are split across grades eight and nine, with 20 people at grade eight and 32 at grade nine and reader.
Overall, more women applied for promotion than men in the most recent round. Of the applications made, 57% were from women and 43% from men. Success rates mirrored this; 57% of all people promoted are women and 43% men.
The College’s overall academic staff gender profile changes depending on grade. When looking at all academic staff, 45% are male, 55% are female. This balance changes at professorial level where currently 70% of the 308 total professors are male and 30% female.
Professional Services regrading data
The process for Professional Services regrading differs from Academic Promotions, in that it is the role itself that is regraded and not the individual post-holder. This applies for all Professional Services jobs covered by the administrative, technical, operational and general grade profiles. Applicants must demonstrate that there has been a significant change in the responsibilities, knowledge, experience or skills required to do the job and a new job description must be written as part of the application process.
This year, 14 professional services colleagues successfully moved to a higher grade, from a total of 23 applications. Of those who moved to a higher grade, the regraded roles span grades four to eight, with 2 at grade four, 4 at grade six, 4 at grade seven, and 4 at grade eight.
There was no significant difference between success rates of applications from women or men. 78% of the applications were from women and 22% from men. Overall, 11 of the successful applications were made by women (79%) and 3 by men (21%).
The College’s overall staff profile by gender in Professional Services has a much higher proportion of female staff than with academic staff, at 78%. At grade 10, the professional services equivalent of professor, 72% of our staff are women.
Next year
In previous years, the Academic Promotions process has taken place annually and Professional Services regrading has taken place three times per year. As part of the University’s aim to reduce operating costs, the academic promotions process and regrading of professional services jobs are currently paused. This means that there will be no promotion application process in the academic year 2025-26. This process will be reviewed in May 2026.
