Congratulations to all of the CMVM staff who were promoted or had their roles regraded in the most recent round of promotions and rewards.

Outcome letters have now been shared with all staff who applied in the most recent 2023/24 rounds. In total, 111 staff from the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine received promotions or regraded roles.

Staff in the College can apply for either academic promotion or professional services regrading depending on their job role. The Academic Promotions process takes place annually and the Professional Services regrading takes place three times per year.

College Registrar Anne-Marie Coriat said: “We are pleased to see the continued progress made by colleagues across College. Congratulations to everyone who has been recognised in this round of promotions and rewards. We are particularly delighted to see teaching promotions being recognised and to see advances to senior grades for professional services staff.

We know that hybrid roles are also a crucial part of the way we work across the College. Many of our colleagues combine several different aspects of work that are crucial to the delivery of our academic mission, including combined teaching and research, research and technical work, academic and professional services, and College dean roles with academic delivery.

Career development is a core part of what we do across College – we look forward to discussing how we evolve our approach to promotions and advancement in a way that underpins the value we place on the diversity of roles we have and need across the College.”

Academic promotion data

Academic promotions are considered on a number of different criteria, and applicants must demonstrate their strengths in a variety of areas. Applications for academic promotion are submitted in writing, supported by references and are considered by a panel.

The genders used in the overall data are “female” and “male” which is in line with current University of Edinburgh human resources data gathering practice.

In the 2023 to 2024 cycle, 59 of our academic colleagues achieved promotion from a total of 74 applications. Of these, 14 are made professor (grade 10). Nine of our new professors are women, five are men. The remaining 45 people promoted are split across grades seven to nine, with 1 person at grade seven, 14 at grade eight and 30 at grade nine and reader.

Overall, more women applied for promotion than men in the most recent round. Of the applications made, 68% were from women and 32% from men. Success rates were roughly similar; 66% of all people promoted are women and 34% men.

The College’s overall academic staff gender profile changes depending on grade. When looking at all academic staff, 45% are male, 55% are female. This balance changes at professorial level where currently 70% of the 293 total professors are male and 30% female.

Professional Services regrading data

The process for Professional Services regrading differs from Academic Promotions, in that it is the role itself that is regraded and not the individual post-holder. This applies for all Professional Services jobs covered by the administrative, technical, operational and general grade profiles. Applicants must demonstrate that there has been a significant change in the responsibilities, knowledge, experience or skills required to do the job and a new job description must be written as part of the application process.

This year, we congratulate 52 professional services colleagues who have successfully moved to a higher grade, from a total of 83 applications. Of those who moved to a higher grade, the regraded roles span grades four to nine, with one at grade four, 11 at grade five, 13 at grade six, 20 at grade seven, five at grade eight and two at grade nine.

There was no significant difference between success rates of applications from women or men. 80% of the applications were from women and 20% from men. Overall, 41 of the successful applications were made by women (79%) and 11 by men (21%).

The College’s overall staff profile by gender in Professional Services has a much higher proportion of female staff than with academic staff, at 80%. At grade 10, the professional services equivalent of professor, 71% of our staff are women.

Annual increments

On 1 August 2024, almost all staff were eligible to receive an automatic increment increase on the pay scale.

The only exceptions are staff who are not on the University of Edinburgh pay scale, those who receive an off-scale salary, new staff who have yet to complete three full months service by 1 August, or those who are above point 58 on the pay scale.

Following the University-wide grade scale changes that were implemented in April, more than 15,000 colleagues received an increase to their pay this month, either as part of their normal contractual progression through the spine points in their grade, or due to extra spine points being added to their grade.

More than 6,000 staff received an automatic increment when they otherwise would not have because they were previously at the top of their grade.

These salary changes were reflected in August payslips.

Contribution reward process

Colleagues in grades UE01-UE09 who excel in their role, whether academic or professional services, can also be rewarded through additional increments or a lump sum award called the Contribution Reward Process. Nominations can be made by line managers, employees or by self-nominating (both individuals and teams). This reward recognises either sustained or one-off exceptional performance contributions throughout the year. This happens once a year for both academic and professional service colleagues. Decisions are made by a panel and are based on written applications. There is a separate but similar process for employees at Grade UE10 and other professorial grades.

For employees currently at the top of their pay band, a successful nomination under the Contribution Reward Policy will take them into what are known as the discretionary points on the pay scale.
