Grassroots Heritage, Powering Regeneration

Sarah Pearce (The Heritage Network)

This masterclass is jointly offered by the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies and the Heritage Network.

Grassroots heritage regeneration is thriving across Scotland, driven by the efforts of dedicated professional heritage trusts and passionate local communities. These initiatives focus on the preservation and adaptive reuse of traditional and historic buildings of every type, size, and condition, ensuring that Scotland’s rich architectural legacy continues to inspire and serve future generations.

Join this engaging event to explore the current priorities and pressing challenges facing this area of the heritage sector. Gain valuable insights into the ongoing work of the Heritage Network and discover exciting opportunities for those considering or embarking on a career in this dynamic field.

The event will feature presentations from the experienced staff team, alongside a compelling community case study by Emma Lawrence from Gracemount Mansion Development Trust that will offer a unique, first-hand perspective on navigating the complexities of heritage work. Learn how grassroots efforts are making difficult but essential decisions to balance local community needs with broader national priorities, fostering collaboration and innovation in the process.

The Heritage Network:

Heritage Network (formerly Heritage Trust Network) is the membership body for independent community organisations, charities and social enterprises that are saving, restoring and managing historic buildings, parks, gardens, canals and railways. Our membership includes both organisations specifically set up to save heritage sites and community organisations that deliver other types of services, who have chosen to operate from historic buildings and spaces. We also welcome individuals, businesses and local authorities that support local heritage action. Together we organise conferences, site visits, meetings and online resources where we can network and learn from each other and meet experts and funders.

With a membership of over 900 organisations and individuals across the UK, our organisation is rapidly expanding from 6 to 12 employees in 2025. Development and Outreach Manager – Sarah Pearce and Heritage Trainee – Grace Richardson make up the Scotland team and are funded by Historic Environment Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland
