‘Fairer futures: Reflections on Edinburgh’s environmental and cultural vernacular’

Calum Duncan

‘Every decision we make as architects, urban designers, planners, clients or users, is tainted by our preconceptions, nostalgic responses and conditioning of when we believe our ‘built environment-related core needs’ are met. With a greater understanding of embodied carbon as well as our current environmental and cultural vernacular, it is time to start reflecting on how we conserve and how we develop.

About

Calum Duncan Architects Ltd (CDAL) is an award-winning architectural practice in Edinburgh. We work on residential, educational and community-related projects across Scotland. CDAL’s principal, founding director Calum Duncan has 25 years of experience in both large and small architectural practices. Calum’s experience includes multiple RIBA award-winners and the first refurbished or listed building to achieve BREEAM Outstanding. Calum is a conservation and sustainability accredited, Passivhaus-accredited designer, a member of the RIBA Council,  a trustee of Play Scotland, and the lead coordinator of the Archischools project.

‘Reimagining is a guiding principle for Calum’s practice, where the design of homes, buildings, places and spaces are rigorously considered, then careful and creative design solutions are developed, working closely with the clients. Solutions work to improve the function of spaces and efficiency of the building fabric to make homes and places which are not necessarily bigger, but are more delightful, more energy efficient, have improved connection to the outdoors and better daylight and sunlight while using natural, locally sourced and characterful materials‘.
