Week 13: Funding and Budgeting –

Introduction
Within this post I will be discussing everything money including: funding, gallery hire, artist fees, artist transport and accommodation (where applicable), commissioning, and material funding and constraints.
Funding:
Ways of Repair: Loss and Damage is a £10000 grant for artist and curators in the UK. They seek artists who seek to undertake a new or existing research project engaging with the issue of loss within the climate crisis (Artrabbit, 2025).
Additionally, The Southall Trust Environmental Action and Sustainability grant would supply a £2000 grant to supplement the public engagement program, though this funding has not previously funded arts programs, they have supplied grants of over £3000 to enable lobbying for climate awareness across the UK (Southalltrust.org, 2025). I would propose that the public engagement would include workshops that would have a similar reach to the population of Glasgow.
All artist fees are predicted, and sourced from the Artist Union England webpage (Rates of Pay – Artists’ Union England)
Gallery Hire: £600
Strange Field hire rate is not publicly available, however a subsidised fee is applied depending on how many and to what extent Strange Field’s ‘strategic priorities’ are fulfilled. These include:
- Supporting under-represented and early career artists and curators
- Prioritizing accessibility and resilience with embedded artist-led activity
- Working with local communities in east Glasgow
After discussing hiring fees with the organisers of I DARE YOU TO LOVE ME exhibition I established that they were charged £275 for an exhibition lasting 1 week (6 days of opening, with four days installation time), which represented an early career artist and curator and supported accessibility through the use of audio translations of written pieces.
My speculative project represents under-represented and early career artists exclusively, whilst fostering accessibility by curating tactile, audio, and visual pieces, supplemented by commissioned public engagement programmes that activate the local area and communities in east Glasgow with walking workshops by Lance Layoan. Additionally, supplemental discussion with program organizers revealed that the cost per day of hire is reduced for longer exhibitions. As a result, for the two week exhibition I would expect the total hiring cost to be less than £550 (double the fee for one week for the I DARE YOU TO LOVE ME exhibition). However, as I do not have a confirmed fee I will budget £600 for a two week hiring expense to account for any unforeseen additions in price.
Artist Insurance: £600
After investigating multiple websites that offer arts insurance , I have found that temporary exhibition insurance can vary between £57 – £149 (Actinsurance.com, 2025) (JohnLewisfinance.com, 2025) (cocompare.com, 2025). As a result of this discrepancy the artists will be offered an allowance of £100 each to insure their work as they see fit.
With 6 artists in this project a total of £600 will be attributed to insurance of artwork against damages
Artist communication: £564.78
I believe that correct artist communication is required to ensure that the displayed artwork is installed correctly, and presented in a way that is accurate to the artist’s intentions. As a result, all calls correspondence and statement writing will be compensated for approximately 0.5 days’ worth of time in total for each artist.
£94.13 * 6 = £564.78
Artist Fees and Postal payment
In this section the artist’s fee will be stated in conjunction with additional costs, depending on travel and accommodation.
Artists will be offered a base fee of £500 for one piece of work. In the cases where artists are asked to install multiple works, £150 will be added to the total per additional piece. Additional pieces will be approximated based on the estimated time that it would take to complete the work and based on the Union of Artist’s freelance payment information.
Travel costs are estimated based on Trainline.com listings.
Accommodation is estimated based on the Booking.com listings.
Shipping costs are based on Royal Mail quotes and are doubled to accommodate for shipping the work to and from the gallery, unless otherwise stated.
Artist Fees: £4702.21
Charlotte Alexander: 1585.58
The work is dependent on in situ installation; thus, the artist would have to be present for installation. Travel costs, and accommodation fees will be provided as a form of reimbursement.
