DeepSeek Goes Viral? At the beginning of 2025, DeepSeek broke through technical barriers and reached the Chinese general public, becoming a frequently discussed topic. In the past, ChatGPT large models dominated the Chinese public’s memory. The popularity of DeepSeek is not only a technical breakthrough, but also marks the transition of AI technology from a “game dominated by giants” to a new era of “collective creation by all.”

What makes DeepSeek stand out?
As one of the few truly open-source large models, DeepSeek provides complete models and inference code, allowing developers, researchers, and companies to freely download and modify them. From my own experience, DeepSeek is indeed far more advanced than previous Chinese AI models. For example, tools like Baidu’s Wenxin Yiyuan, Deep Exploration, and Kimi are mostly limited to simple knowledge-based question-answering tasks and do not support solving complex or challenging problems. In practice, I found that its problem-solving logic and reasoning are similar to ChatGPT, capable of intuitively and accurately understanding user input and providing actionable solutions and insights.
Additionally, DeepSeek has a significant advantage in terms of “low cost.” Its usage costs are lower compared to international products like ChatGPT, especially in China where it can be directly integrated and deployed without the need to route through overseas servers or pay high API fees, breaking the industry myth that “more computing power is always better.”

DeepSeek’s marketing strategies
DeepSeek’s rapid rise to prominence is also driven by its powerful marketing strategies. The core elements of its marketing message are: low development costs, robust performance, and an open-source strategy. Its diverse communication channels are fundamentally the result of a synergy between technology democratization, capital-driven growth, educational empowerment, and media buzz. In contrast, ChatGPT’s marketing approach is quite different. ChatGPT primarily relies on global brand recognition, technological leadership, and a product directly targeted at end-users to drive adoption. DeepSeek, on the other hand, focuses more on attracting developers and the technical community, and most importantly, its narrative of domestic innovation has resonated with the Chinese public.

This leads me to reflect that DeepSeek’s rise to prominence is the result of both the quality of its product and its narrative strategy. Moving forward, the future development of the innovation industry should prioritize leveraging existing resources, tools, and platforms to unlock new cultural, artistic, and commercial possibilities.
