Week 2: Exploring Curatorial Formats and Collective Thinking
This week marked an important step in our curatorial journey as we met our tutorial group and tutor for Semester 2. Our group consists of members from diverse academic backgrounds, bringing a range of perspectives and methodologies to the table. This diversity sparked rich discussions and highlighted the many ways curatorial practice can be approached.
Curatorial Project Formats: Initial Thoughts
As part of our planning meeting, we transferred content from last week onto the Miro board and began exploring different curatorial project formats. Some of the key formats we discussed included:
- Private vs. Public Exhibitions: The contrast between intimate, domestic-scale projects and large-scale public exhibitions in museums or galleries.
- Artist-Organized and Temporary Exhibitions: The role of artists as curators and the potential for pop-up, recurring, or traveling shows.
- Site-Specific and Biennial Projects: How location and time-based elements shape the curatorial experience.
- Dialogues and Open Studios: The significance of process-oriented curating where artists and curators engage in ongoing conversations.
Each format presents unique challenges and opportunities, and our group considered how different approaches could shape audience engagement and accessibility. One interesting example that emerged in discussion was the idea of curatorial projects that incorporate local communities, breaking down traditional institutional barriers.
Toolkit for Blog Entries
We also engaged with a set of slides that expanded on last week’s discussion regarding our summative assessment: the Curatorial Portfolio. The blog is not just a documentation tool but a reflective space to map out our thought processes, test ideas, and refine our curatorial approaches over time.
Some useful strategies from the toolkit included:
Writing concisely while capturing key insights.
Using blog entries to trace conceptual shifts and evolving interests.
Incorporating images and references to enhance engagement.

As we continue developing our curatorial methods, this blog will serve as a valuable archive of our progress. Moving forward, I hope to explore how curating can function beyond traditional exhibition spaces, particularly in relation to digital and immersive formats.
