1.4 Reflect on the ethical norms, values, principles or theories that will inform their approach to the intervention

With respect to my current idea for my Futures Project (a proposal to increase corporation tax for AI companies to 98%), the ethical risks are minimal. The predominant sources of information employed for this research encompass economic, political, technological, and ethical materials, all of which inherently pose low ethical risks.

Furthermore, this research design minimises the need for direct data collection from individuals, and if any such data gathering is deemed necessary, it will primarily consist of opinion-based data. This approach ensures that the research does not entail the collection of sensitive information from data subjects, with any data collected being maintained in an anonymous form to further safeguard against potential ethical concerns.

The ethical risk framework is structured within a range spanning levels 1 to 4:

Level 1: Your research project is completely desk-based (i.e. does not involve participants) and does not use information about living, identifiable individuals (‘data subjects’)

Level 2: Applies to non-intervention research where you have the consent of the participants and data subjects. This may include, for example, analysis of archived data, classroom observation, or questionnaires on topics that are not generally considered ‘sensitive’. This research can involve children or young people, if the likelihood of risk to them is minimal

Within this taxonomy of risk levels, my project is anticipated to align predominantly with level 1, though it may conceivably reach a maximum of level 2.

In my ethical review form, I plan to confirm the absence of plans to collect sensitive data from any data subjects, emphasising that the project’s primary source of information will be academic literature.
