2.5 Supervisor meeting – what was discussed, what feedback and ideas did you receive?

Prior to my first supervisor meeting, I was unclear on the content required for my project’s supporting statement, as well as the most appropriate next steps to take. My supervisor, Aidan, provided some very helpful feedback, which is summarised below:

  • During the meeting, a significant decision was made to narrow down the focus of my thesis. While initially contemplating the exploration of socialist or capitalist structures within the AI domain, we concluded that these economic systems could exist independently of commodification. My focus has therefore shifted towards discussing the commodification of AI.
  • One of my main queries for the meeting was surrounding the content of my creative output’s supporting statement. My supervisor proposed exploring the current available academic research into the economic dimensions of AI commodification in detail in the form of a literature review, which would take up a large portion of my word count. He suggested I start with a comprehensive bibliography that aligns with this thematic framework.
  • Additionally, the feedback I received regarding my reading list offered clarity and direction: it was comforting to learn that I could reduce the emphasis on older political paradigms e.g. antiquity, allowing me to allocate more space and focus to explore contemporary and relevant themes.

This meeting helped to clarify the focus for my project over the next few weeks, with a renewed focus on AI commodification, informed by insights into economic theory and the exciting prospect of creative expression. I’m excited to further explore this intriguing topic.
