1.9 How has your learning, and/or feedback influenced your thinking about the direction your project is taking? How are you integrating the literature into the plan?

In embarking on my research journey, I have received valuable feedback and engaged with relevant literature as part of my learning. Here, I outline the key insights gained from each of these elements during my programme.

Influence of Learning & Integration of Literature

  • Legislation
The legal literature encountered in Data and Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Law and Governance and Democracy, Rights and the Rule of Law in the Data-Driven Society offers a valuable foundation for my project. It serves as a persuasive tool to argue for the necessity of further action and facilitates an in-depth analysis of the extent of required measures. This literature not only informs my project’s legal aspects but also broadens my understanding of the complex interplay between legal frameworks and economic structures, aligning with the core themes of capitalism.
  • Creative outputs
Narratives of Digital Capitalism has contributed to the curation of my project idea in two key ways. Firstly, it has enhanced my academic focus on capitalism and other economic systems, providing a nuanced understanding of digital capitalism’s various facets. Secondly, it has influenced the methodology and format of my project. My learning in this course has helped me crystallise the type of output I aim to produce. The academic grounding gained from this course acts as a compass, guiding me through the intricate landscape of capitalist studies.
  • Detailed perspectives
Ethics of Robotics and Autonomous Systems has played a pivotal role in offering a zoomed-in perspective on the implications of AI in our current (so, a capitalist) society. It serves as a valuable resource for dissecting the pros and cons of technological advancements within the current economic trajectory. This course therefore equips me with insights into the potential consequences of persisting on our current path, providing a crucial context for the broader implications of my research.

My two core courses (Insights Through Data and Interdisciplinary Futures) do not include any literature directly relevant to my project, but they have helped me to broaden my skill set and will therefore have indirectly contributed to my project’s development.

Influence of Feedback

  • Ethics of Robotics and Autonomous Systems: Optional 1-2 Page Draft Outline of White Paper
The optional white paper feedback was a pivotal moment in my learning process. It underscored the need for a more critical and comprehensive approach to research, urging me to explore diverse perspectives on my paper’s topic. This new way of approaching research is suitable for my project, with part of its focus being on capitalism and economics. I was solely focused on philosophical perspectives during my undergraduate studies, so this adjustment involves embracing a multi-/inter- disciplinary approach, plus enriching the depth of my research within each area.
  • Insights Through Data: Individual Programming Practical Tasks
Receiving good marks in these tasks has instilled confidence in my learning overall. While no explicit comments were provided, the acknowledgement of successful programming on my part has been reassuring and helped to motivate other parts of my programme, including my project.

══════════════════

The integration of feedback and literature into my project has been useful in shaping its direction. As I continue this research journey, these insights will undoubtedly serve as the bedrock for a robust and nuanced exploration of the intersections between capitalism, economics, and technology.
