Land, Community, and Power – The Heart of Sustainable Development
The Land, Community, and Power course rapidly emerged as one of my preferred subjects due to its integration of the technical facets of land management with the social and political factors influencing land use decisions. The lesson compelled me to perceive land not merely as a physical thing but as a reservoir of power, identity, and communal resilience.
I reflected on my experiences in St. Kitts and Nevis, where land is both a vital resource and intricately connected to our history and community. We discussed land ownership and access, and I recognized how the choices made by people in authority—governments, companies, or community leaders—can either empower or marginalize local populations.
Your reflection brings a strong personal connection to the course content, highlighting the intersection of land, power, and community. The way you’ve linked the technical and social aspects of land management is insightful, particularly your focus on how land ownership and access shape local resilience. Your perspective from St. Kitts and Nevis adds depth to the discussion of land as more than just a resource—it’s also a tool for empowerment or marginalization, which is a critical point in sustainable development.
