In this afternoon’s group discussion, the lead tutor first talked about some of the evaluation criteria for curation, as well as some supporting details, such as project collaborators, time management, budget, etc. Then, the group tutor asked each of us to report on the development and problems of our own projects. I think this was very helpful for me. First, I listened to the problems encountered by other students. For example, one of them said that she didn’t know how to make the audience understand the works in the exhibition rather than just glancing at them. I suggested a solution, which was to set up some text in the exhibition to help the audience understand. The tutor mentioned that you can also set some questions to guide the audience to think while viewing, which I think I can also draw on in the layout of my exhibition to help enhance the audience’s in-depth understanding of the works and the theme of the exhibition.
Another student raised the issue of the audience and how to attract the target audience to the exhibition. At first, I didn’t quite understand this question either, but the tutor gave me an example in reply: the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh. Because it is next to the train station, a transport hub, people who pass by are very likely to come in and have a look. So I have also thought about some ways that might attract the audience to come and see the exhibition.
Then there are the problems I encounter, for example, if most of the artists I choose are Chinese female artists, then can’t I just name them Asian female artists in general? I might be more specific and call it Chinese female artists, and the corresponding theme will also reflect the struggle of Chinese women in the family and society. There is also the question of theme. The theme I chose before was inspired by two articles, but it was not a correct framework. I should focus more on thinking about the theme itself and the work, and the articles should only play a supplementary role. So I will also revise the presentation of my theme.
