Week 5

Graduate/Postgraduate Production Participation Update

This week I had an email conversation with Lillette Burga Tuesta. She asked me to provide a portfolio of my work, as she is considering giving me a role in design. The role was not clarified what kind of design I was to take a part of.

I continued the conversation with Felicity regarding set roles.

Masterclass Takeaway

This week on the masterclass we were presented a speech delivered by producer Roisin Kelly. Her experience covers a wide range of media, from television to cinema. A producer is a person who covers a wide range of responsibilities, but the main role is to establish budgeting of the process throughout pre-production, production and post-production. Budget management is probably the most mainstream and key feature of a producer. Apart from sourcing the budget, producer is responsible for managing the project to continue being in production: acquiring rights, contracts, and after-post work on film’s distribution to festivals. The bureaucrat of production.

Pre-production responsibilities: a producer might start looking and researching for creatives to work on the project, i.e  writers, directors, etc. This also includes logistics and finding technical personnel.

Production responsibilities: keep the production running! Problem-solving, for example. Slightly reminded me of the assistant director role.

Post-production responsibilities include collaborating with designers, VFX artists, editors; in particular observing the quality of the product.

In conclusion, the role of the producer is crucial for the film to come to life in terms of economy. This is what either grounds the creative process either, having the opportunity, finds a way to adapt to it.
