‘Stargazing’, camera-less short film

‘An introduction to the moving image: expanded history’, my second semester elective, prompted me to create a pictureless short film only using the power of audio. With this, I decided to create a film of stargazing. The film starts with ambient night life fading to the sound of a car driving by with faint radio music playing. It then moves into the vehicle with the music louder then an indicator sound. From here the audio moves back outside with the car pulling up and parking with the music stopping. The girl can be heard getting out and walking to proceed placing a blanket on the ground, situating herself and breathing a sigh of relief. The ambient night life takes over with the sound of faint twinkling of stars as well as my own music to create a calm and serene picture of the night sky.

‘Stargazing’, animatic short film

watercolour and pen on paper storyboard

With the physical storyboard made, I traced the frames digitally and began the process of developing the animatic frame by frame.

With this frame, I included extra details so I could shake the image without  white showing to replicate the car moving.

By using the pre-recorded audio, I synced the frames to match with their corresponding sounds.

To create the firefly effect, I animated a single shot of a yellow orb jittering about on a green screen. From here, I blocked the green screen out on top of the final animatic and layered it over and over at different speeds, sizes and transparencies to replicate fireflies during the scenes.
