We looked at a range of organisations to explore their vision, aims, ethics and values; how these are translated to audiences through websites and social media. These contribute towards their standing in the art world, the audiences they wish to engage with and how they run their spaces. These manifest through public programmes, community works, finance, care and criticality/ethics, curation, accessibility and organisational structures. How transparent are these aspects of various gallery/museum spaces?

GENERATOR PROJECTS- Dundee

Vision: platforming artists, ‘highlight the importance of grassroot activity’, ‘developing careers of emerging artists’, ability to ‘gain experience in contemporary venue’.

Aims: facilitate the demands of contemporary creative talent in the city, ‘generate vibrant culture in Dundee through providing sustained support towards a diverse programme’, ‘intention is to maintain a high quality of exhibitions and to develop curatorial ideas with artists, which will act as a pivotal step in their development and allow them the freedom to experiment’.

Organisational: ‘rolling collective of volunteers who dedicate two years of their time to ensure the continuation of the programmed space and the broader aspects of the organisation’, change of ‘staffing’ every 2 years to maintain its aims and ethics of creating opportunities for all artists, Our committee handle all aspects of the day-to-day running of our space and organisation (paying the bills, emptying the bins, painting the walls, cleaning the toilet, answering emails, applying for funding, budgeting the funding, reporting on the funding…) as well as dipping into the more fun stuff (programming, curating, paying artists, making friends), keeping new ideas and ways of curating the space running.

Ethics: working directly with artists to nurture talent, ‘we work with local and national artists to bring new and exciting projects to the city while maintaining a welcoming environment for all those who wish to engage with and support the organisation. We are a vital stepping stone for arts graduates providing them with paid work and opportunities for networking’, ‘strives to provide meaningful opportunities for artists, craftspeople, and students, and to involve the local community in a critically engaging programme’.

Accessibility: whole website page dedicated to access needs that members and audiences may require. What facilities are on site and clearly states to ask if any questions regarding this.

Programming: during our calendar year we have small gaps, we don’t like to see our gallery empty and so actively encourage our membership to submit proposals for use of the space. This is an opportunity to put on an exhibition or event, with the guidance of the GENERATOR projects committee, for free. Mix of projects on the website consisting of take-overs, group exhibitions, call-outs..

public takeover where everyone is invited to use ‘messy’ materials to create a collective mural. It states on the event page that materials are provided but people are allowed to bring more. This is expressed as a way to get ‘messy’ and meet new and like-minded people.
