Blog Post 6: The Future of the Collection

At the beginning of this project, I was very hesitant to do an event as I know how difficult a good one is to pull off. I was also concerned that this would not inspire lasting change at the University level. However, after the success of the event, I was (gladly) proven wrong on both fronts. The event itself was an overwhelming success. Our surveys showed growth in the attendee’s knowledge levels and interest in another event of this nature. This was very exciting for me, knowing that people came, enjoyed themselves, and have a continued interest in this topic was exactly what the group, wanted. We also had a mix of attendees from students and staff to community members.

I believe lasting change has also been inspired by this event. Jude invited the Rector of the university to the event, which I believe was an excellent choice. She was incredibly moved by both the talks and the tour. Though she has had a bit of an extreme response to this, I believe with more time and more education on the collection she will understand it on a deeper level. She is incredibly interested in repatriation and getting in touch with communities, which is what most at the museum want as well. Hopefully, she will become a powerful ally of the museum in its fight to receive more funding, more employees, and possibly even better facilities (or maybe they’ll just fix the leak in the roof).

The people who came to the event seemed genuinely interested in the collection, its history, and its maintenance. I believe this will allow for the Skull Collection and the Anatomical Museum to get the funding it deserves to be as successful as possible.
