Week 2
Sunlight and Daylight Lecture
- Natural light is personal, connects humans with their environment and is associated with memories
- Daylight is different to sunlight
- Daylight is like the diffused light.
- Sunlight is the direct rays from the sun.
- Temporality of daylight and sunlight is its beauty.
- Natural light in hospital can improve the health of the patient.
- Exposure to daylight is necessary for our health and well-being. Designed spaces must accommodate this.

- Illuminance is the amount of light falling onto or illuminating a given surface area. It is measured in Lux
- Luminance is It describes the amount of light that passes through, is emitted from, or is reflected from a particular area, and falls within a given solid angle. The SI unit for luminance is candela per metre square (cd/m2)
- Lighting metrics:
DF (Daylight Factor ) = [ EI (Indoor daylight illuminance) X 100% ] / EO (Outdoor daylight illuminance)
Daylight – 3 Rules of thumb
- Designing with contextual situation, orientation and layers.
- Designing with integration of daylight and artificial light.
- Daylight – The Overcast Sky Condition.
St Albert’s Catholic Chaplaincy
The church uses both natural and artificial light. The west wall where the shrine is placed is fully glazed with the backdrop
of the garden allowing the natural light to enter. The northern wall has fenestrations, some of which were angular letting
in the diffused light.
The southern wall has a combination of both the natural and artificial light. The slits between the wooden fins allows
natural light to pass through. And there are some spot lights fixed between these curved fins. On the wall, strip lights
are fixed between the fins to lighten the space but also create an ambient effect.
This is a white on black sketch of the lighting in the space based on their tonal values.
These are the readings noted based on measuring the illuminance with the lux meter.
At 12:10PM
Outdoor daylight illuminance= 5000 lux
Indoor daylight illuminance=15.6 lux
DF Daylight Factor = 15.6 X 100 / 5000 = 0.312 %
Which is less than 2% so the room is considered to be gloomy and electric lighting is necessary during the daytime.
