Types of Lighting

Uplight:

It is the placement of individual light sources at the base of architectural details or points of interest,
typically around the perimeter of a space, to draw attention to those details.

Downlight:

A downlight is a light fitting that lights in a downward direction to light an area below. They are usually

recessed into the ceiling so you see only a small part of fitting below the ceiling.

Wallwasher:

Wall washing illuminates a vertical surface with uniform brightness. Wall washing draws attention

to the wall, and can be used to accentuate an entrance, fireplace, or artwork.

Recessed light:

Recessed lights are a type of lighting fixture installed into the ceiling or wall. They are designed to
sit flush with the surface for a sleek and polished finish. The housing and electrical wiring components
are hidden, and the bulb appears to glow from within the opening.

Pendant lights:

A pendant light, sometimes called a drop or suspender, is a lone light fixture that hangs from the

ceiling usually suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod. Pendant lights are often used in multiples,

hung in a straight line over kitchen countertops and dinette sets or sometimes in bathrooms.

Slot of light:

Slot light has been designed as a continuous light line for flush mounting with the ceiling or walls.

Back light:

Backlight emphasizes the depth behind the decorative element and gives a Dramatic effect. Backlighting
can produce a dramatic contrast between the object and the background.

Projected light:

Lighting strategies – Workshop

The type of space that we got was “Private theatre”.

Site – Philip Johnson’s glass house.

Since it is a building with all four walls made of glass we wanted to provide panels to eliminate the

natural light entering the building.

The Atmosphere we went for was: Luxurious, Dramatic, Exciting and Cosy.

We chose to use the following Strategies: Low ambient light and Accent light.

Luminaires: Recessed light, slot of light and accent lights for the steps.
