Reflection thinking: What elements should we think about when we think as a curator or make curating?

The first part is the environmental aspect to be concerned with such as the height of the ceiling, transverse or oblique, contained with the windows or not. Because it is necessary to consider the reflection and absorption of the light. It reminded me of a good example of Emma Hart’s work with her installations for those patterns of jag shape. The dark ceiling and the point of light on the floor create a stark contrast, and the audience will focus on the shape of the jag on the floor.

The ceiling in Talbot Rice Gallery contains open space, bright and spacious, which is suitable for some novelty contemporary artworks, I cited another example from Emma Hart- “The dirty looks”. The installations are open and well-settled with the space and a bright ceiling. To give my opinion of view on this, the open space relates to commons installation for viewpoints and short-term contemporary artworks.

The color of the wall is another consideration for audiences. The darker color makes the audience feel serious, and the more saturated color gives a brighter and more emphatic feeling. Sometimes like a reminder to tell the audience what kind of theme this exhibition aims at. The stairs are access to the second floor. What need to think about here is the closed space compared to the open one, the ceiling is drift halfway down to the floor referring to an artwork of video with sounds.

Then we moved to the second middle part of an enclosed wide window structure of site-specific space. The relatively narrow space with the first impression, however, the wall-painted artwork may change another feeling to the audience’s visual extension. Finally, the last part of the gallery is displayed Zhijie Qiu’s artworks. The third space is spacious with classical column types based on ancient Greece. This site-specific may be suitable to exhibit some historical, ancient cultural, or classical characteristic painting/printing works.  For example, Zhijie Qiu’s work is related to the geopolitics of historical Chinese maps which is quite abstract from a macroscopic point of view and to present the grandeur of China’s thousand-year history and culture.
