WEEK 1

During my visit to the National Gallery Scotland, I was thinking about how to arrange the order of the exhibits. Because there were eight small rooms in the exhibition hall at that time, the exhibits were organized and displayed according to themes. However, I am only planning to take one theme as the starting point, a Chinese cartoon character “Wang Ye” as the starting point of the exhibition. Of course I can’t just show an animated character and that is the initial idea.

Since Wang also brings together the background of physics and the background of the traditional Chinese religion Taoism, I need to show his dual background identity to express the thinking and contradiction brought by the combination of identity and dual identity. The present display form that I think of is Yin and Yang Taiji chart. The black and white colors display the two identities of the background of the exhibits. I hope to convey another “identity situation” through this exhibition. Different people may encounter identity contradictions in different situations. This dilemma may not be the difference between marginal groups and mainstream groups, but the difference between two opposite identities in two opposite environments. Therefore, I hope to express the dilemma and integration of ordinary people when different identities overlap with each other through “Wang Ye”.

When reading 《Who sets agenda?》,in the process, I found that the author divided the legalization of relevance into four stages. In my opinion, “relevance” is a kind of criteria for evaluating “places of art practice”. The four stages are: 1949-1970s, the establishment of the main status of “social relevance”. The second stage was from 1970s to 1980s, when “institute” was proposed. The third stage was the 1980s and 1990s, when economic logic “looming” cultural practice. The fourth stage is the expansion of legalization context after the 1990s. But here’s a definition that leaves me wondering: what is “the legitimising discourse at the juncture between cultural politics and individual institutions”? It seems to be an identity, but I can’t find a case to explain this curious junction.
