Finished Exhibition——“Alienation”

Main Entrance:

New World City Space:

Cocoon of Fog Space:

The virtual set for this exhibition was created by myself and guest curator Yifan Xu, and we had a wonderful time working together. Special thanks to artists Chun Sun and Chen Congpu for their support.

It was really difficult at first because we could barely build a 3D model and we had no idea how to present our artists’ work as the space was completely blank and empty when we entered. As we kept trying, we thought it would be cool to turn it into a space. So the first space we created was the New World Organ. Our original plan was to have two artists’ works in one room, but then we felt that Chun sun and Chen Congpu’s styles were too different, so we decided to create an extra room to display them.

First we created the New World Organ, we chose the ocean as the backdrop for the space because the artist’s work was inspired by a science fiction novel set under the sea, so it looked coherent, we chose to place the exhibition’s promotional text on one wall of the space, with a 3D font and a reflection of silver light (I love this part). The two models were modelled by the artist and the splash of water that holds the work was created by us (it was difficult and took us a long time to make the model transparent to give the impression of a splash of water), I basically learned it from scratch. We put passages in the room that led to another room so that the route of the exhibition made sense. Finally, we set it to experimental art music that I found with Yifan Xu to make everything in the space more harmonious.

The second space, Cocoon of Fog, is a space we built together with the artist Congpu, a very creative young artist who completed the soundtrack for his own work. The tricky part was the transparent shell of his model, which we had to tweak several times before we could apply a transparent material to it. We also designed a dark red background for his work, and placed a passageway into another room, making the whole exhibition a freer tour.

The main entrance was added specifically in response to audience feedback, so it was kept simple with posters and access to the two art spaces.
