Sprint 2: Portfolio: Reflective Analysis (end of Sprint)

OER & Toolkit: I experienced a lot of different things during the workshop at Edinburgh Sculpture Studio. The workshop model is a form of creative community that I have never seen before. In my country we have similar creative community ‘artist toolkits’ such as the 798 Art Zone in Beijing and the Oil Can Art Centre in Shanghai, which have undeniably contributed a lot to the arts in China, but they operate in a different way, although with the same goal as the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. The aim was to develop the local art industry, explore artistic talent and promote the progress of the art industry, but with the passage of time, the intake of capital and changes in the market environment, the aim has gradually become too commercialised with a focus on profit. It is true that we should learn from the Edinburgh Sculpture Studio’s mode of operation and look for collaborating artists to produce art on an equal contract basis, rather than treating it as a commercial market. For example, through a collaborative studio operation with artists, workshops for the general public, and open-ended artist collaborations and exhibitions, the art community can be fully transformed into an open learning and educational community. But this raises the question of how best to do this with limited funds. I think the focus of the capital operation could be on co-branding with collaborating artists, selling art souvenirs, artist talks, artist workshops, artist tea parties, so as to spread the concept of art without limiting the artist’s creativity, raise public awareness of art, and generate some income for the art community. The artists themselves are able to discuss their projects with people from different fields and backgrounds, thus gaining more and different inspiration.
The art assignment: I felt that the OER I experienced in this class was part of a creative community in the online realm, although I think that the internet allows for better communication and access to a wider range of people from different backgrounds. Indeed, I was able to search for responses to the same art assignment from different people through links and tags, and I was able to learn about different ideas, but this was extremely limited because we didn’t communicate (not everyone is always glued to their phones), so I think that posting art assignments and setting up
an internet meeting is very feasible in the current situation.
At the same time, art festivals, museums and galleries are traditionally more practical and not outdated forms of open art education, so for me I would like to register my own free educational website as an artist’s toolkit by means of online communication, and I hope that it will be in collaboration with relevant sectoral institutions, so that both financial and academic support will be very generous. In my basho activities, as the members’ backgrounds are from different disciplines and a large proportion of them are from non-art backgrounds, I can feel their perspective and judgement on art making from their art making perspective, as some art genres and art styles are not known to them, so there is a bit of confusion and chaos when creating and analysing them, so I feel that in the OER website, I think this could be improved by adding a link to the artwork and artist pages to provide background information on the art, which I think would improve the open education system.

I think the blogger’s analysis of the oer and the kit is very good and has its own take on it. I think adding some activity experience reflections would learn to be richer.

From the work of Tianxing Peng, I clearly saw that he used critical reflection to complete the group work. According to the different academic and working backgrounds of the group members in his red Basho, he made a two-sided reflection on the fields and behavior habits that everyone is good at, so as to infer the most suitable working mode for the group, so as to complete the group contract. This is a new inspiration for me.

In his homework, he showed us that he believed that the purpose of “local art” was to develop the local art industry, explore art talents, and promote the progress of the art industry. However, as time went by, capital absorption and market environment changed, the goal gradually became too commercial and focused on profits. Therefore, he said that we should learn from the operating model of Edinburgh Sculpture Studio and look for cooperative artists to produce works of art on the basis of equal contracts, rather than regard them as a commercial market. I think this has given me a great inspiration. I began to think about how to use Edinburgh’s sculpture studio as a model to create a small “art inspiration distribution center” in my hometown.

There is an angle in the blogger’s article that I like very much. After the workshop ends, he reflects on the Edinburgh Sculpture Studio and analyzes the operation mode of the studio. He believes that it is important to find cooperative artists to produce works of art based on equal contracts. It is considered a commercial market. I like this angle very much, it shows that he has seriously participated in the practice and combined analysis with OER. The idea of the article is very clear, and it also expresses his views on the open education system.

In this blog, the blogger summarizes and reflects on this week’s course activities and assignments. He compares the differences between the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and some art communities within China, and writes about his thoughts on internet art assignments. I believe this blog would be more detailed and comprehensive if some new experiences with workshops and assignments could be added.

The author went to the Oil Can Art Center to participate in the Shanghai Art Circle linkage project 24 Hours, which is located on the West Bank and the West Bank is creating a Shanghai waterfront art circle similar to the Left Bank in Paris and the South Bank in London. I had the privilege of working at the Shanghai West Coast Art Fair. The offshoot of our fair is the Education Fair, which is the open learning education community discussed in the author’s article. The fair exhibits graduate work from the world’s top art and design schools, with forum coverage. It is beneficial for young artists to go to the world to market. I hope we can discuss the development of public platform for education together sometime
