  1. Julie Louise Bacon says:

Hi Jianhao: it’s good to see your curatorial pitch presentation.
Learning Outcome #1. Research: Identify, engage with, and apply a range of contemporary curatorial methods, practices and theories relevant to the commissioning, production, dissemination and archiving of cultural practices.
Your introductory slide breaks down your theme of ‘Recyclable Textiles’ clearly into 3 important issues, well done. However, you do not develop the 3 topics with enough references to artistic and curatorial ideas, practices, themes, or theories. I would like to have heard about such examples in separate slides for 1) Textiles Storytelling, and 2) Textiles and Feminism. It is particularly important to give examles of artists/ exhibitions and curators for your main focus, on clean technology.
Learning Outcome #2: Practice: Working with your peers, commission, produce, disseminate and archive cultural practices, locating your approach in relation to the expanded field of contemporary curatorial theory and practice.
I cannot clearly picture your project: is it an exhibition with physical objects/materials in the space, and explanatory boards, will you use the walls, or screens, or…? You do not situate your work in relation to contemporary curatorial theory and practice. You do situate the technical aspects of recyclable polyester well, but there are many examples of exhibitions and organisations, that have explored your theme. I mentioned Plastic Capitalism in one of my lectures, and ecology-focused exhibitions, here are a couple of examples of exhibitions. This is the beginning of your research, use library resources to identify art journals and books, that contain this information. You can also search the websites of major arts organisations. Your project has an art-science theme to it, but it is crucial you find actual creative/artistic examples to include in your project: you don’t have to have the artworks, you could share information about the practices by photographs, publications or some other material you prepare. You mention involving students, do you mean students from textiles degrees (for example), which could be a good idea, we can talk about this.

You mention using a classroom, how could you develop the idea of adapting a University space? Perhaps by finding a room on a campus that has a connection with your theme, an atmosphere that increases the interest and attraction of your project to the public (think about the Talbot Rice Gallery talk on lighting, architecture and other features of ‘gallery spaces’ or ordinary rooms adapted to become galleries). Here is the link to campus maps to start with https://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/download
Let’s talk about this all more in our Week 6 group chat, please come with any questions.
