Week 11

Many thanks to Frances for her suggestions on the content of my blog in Week 10. With Frances’s comments, I decided to revise some of the content of the final proposal this week.

First of all, the topic of  week 10 is related to virtual reality exhibition. This week, I changed the research topic from virtual reality exhibition to online exhibition. Online exhibits are a way for museums to digitally practice during the pandemic, allowing the public to view them online and to avoid public contact during the pandemic. Leong and Chennupati (2008) point out that the online exhibition is not limited by time, distance or space, but is open through the Internet at different times of the day. Therefore, online exhibition is a popular way of exhibition during the epidemic, which is also worth exploring.

Secondly, the research question. I decided to replace the second research question and the third research question with: What are the benefits of cultural institution hosting online exhibition amid the pandemic? Will cultural institutions lose large numbers of viewers to online exhibition during the pandemic?

Thirdly, as the research objects are narrowed from museums around the world to some museums in the UK, the exhibitions studied are:

Fourthly, about the interview objects, after communicating with Frances, I realized that interviewing the curators related to the exhibition is more meaningful than interviewing the curators of the whole museum, because the curators of the specific exhibition are more familiar with the exhibition. For instance, as for the online exhibition of Young Rembrandt, the interviewer is one of the exhibition’s curators, An Van Camp (Curator of Northern European Art, Ashmolean Museum). That’s because An Van Camp knows a lot about Young Rembrandt exhibition, as you can see in the video below.

These are the changes I made to my final proposal this week.
