Week 6 | Atelier workshop #2: Post qualitative & Artistic Research
Post Qualitative and Artistic Research: Inventing Non-methods
I have to say that anthropology was a disaster for me, there were too many technical terms that overwhelmed me, especially when it came to this Atelier.
For example, when I read Kerasovitis’ article “Post Qualitative Research”, I needed to find out and understand ‘what is Qualitative Research’. and when I read Le Grange’s article “what is (post)qualitative research”, I looked up ‘what is Epistemologically and ontologically ‘.
I have too many unknown treasures to find, (I understand I don’t need to know all the technical terms, but how can I resist unwrapping the gifts placed before me?)
I am not making excuses for my delay in completing my portfolio.
After learning about the explanation of post-qualitative research, I was curious about the relationship between art and post-qualitative. As Professor Neil writes in the hand book, art does not have a long tradition of research methodology design, and art researchers usually base their work on their own feelings and reflections, which has similarities to post-qualitative research.
Given that I am still studying, I cannot say definitively that ‘art is an approach to post-qualitative research’, but anthropology is open-ended and interdisciplinary is a driving force in its development. This is also true for art. So, once again, as the hand book says, we must consider both anthropology and art as the basis of each other and acknowledge the possibility of the interchangeability of anthropologist and artist identities.
In this Atelier we looked at two materials and then we analysed them from the perspective of art studies and post-qualitative anthropology respectively.
But until this moment, I was still trying to figure out what exactly post-qualitative research methods were ……
There is still work to be done to use post-qualitative research methods ……
While you may have struggled with this at the time of the Atelier, you clearly have a firm grasp of what was at stake, i.e.: “anthropology is open-ended and interdisciplinary is a driving force in its development. This is also true for art.” Of course you will have to work more on post-qualitative methods by reading as much as you can about – this is the case for everyone when they encounter something new. Remember also to provide full references + a bibliography just as you would in an essay.
