Week 2 | Create a map of the keywords
24 January 2020
During the first week of Mandatory Reading, I chose ‘Visual Anthropology’ as my keyword, because after reading the literature I found that I was very interested in the development of anthropology and its connection to contemporary art.
Anthropology is presumably presented in language or text, which is the serious definition in books, and Arnd Schneider and Chris Wright argue that ‘Anthropology’s iconophobia and self-imposed restriction of visual expression to text-based models needs to be overcome by a critical engagement with a range of material and sensual practices in the contemporary arts’. Visual anthropology may be the solution to the existence of this limitation.
After reading Sansi’s article introduction, I realised that one of the most important identities of contemporary art is as a vehicle for displaying and solving social problems.
The concept of visual anthropology was proposed to represent a simultaneous change in two disciplines, learning from each other.
During the second week of class, my group members and I shared our keywords with each other and discussed our thoughts on them. Based on the discussion, I made a map with three that I agreed with.
A good Miro map Shuwen. Some more detail on why you chose these words and what you might want to do with them would be helpful. What do you mean when you write that you ‘agreed with’ them? Remember also to provide full references + a bibliography just as you would in an essay.
