Week 9 | Tutorial with Linda

21 March 2022

After my first tutorial with Professor Linda on the topic of the research paper, I decided that the previous direction of ‘anthropological methodologies used by feminist artists in their work’ was not appropriate.

After two weeks of reflection I was still confused about the topic. I changed my mind and wanted to discuss the relationship between the artist’s artistic practice and post-directional research through the work of artist Nikki S Lee, ‘The Project’.

Professor Linda analyse to me about post-directional research and explained to me that there are two forms of research related to art, practice-led research, or research-led practice. Practice-led research is research about the materiality of practice, the study of a specific work. Research-led practice is where an artist has an idea, and he validates that idea through practice.

This student, as an artist, looked at things from a creative perspective, she went to the refugee camps, did fieldwork, interviewed the local people, found the stories in them. And then artist created a series of paintings, poems and words, she produced creative artworks.

This example gave me a shock. When I thought about the project, I just wanted to investigate the truth, without thinking about how to present project results.

I need to rethink ……
