Week7 | Tutorial with Linda about Research Proposal

Research Proposal topic disuse

I have always been concerned about feminist art, so when I was told to write my research proposal I decided I wanted to do a feminist art related project.

In the tutorial, I talk to Linda about my idea and I express my exploration of how anthropological methods can help feminist art develop. Linda asked me, Are you looking for “artists who use anthropological methods” or “What kind of anthropological methods can help feminist artists”?

At the time, I didn’t immediately realise the fundamental difference between the two options. But I replied “I would like to find artists who have used an anthropological method in their work.” At the end of the tutorial and on reflection, I realised that it was only a collection, not a research.

Back to the tutorial itself. After being informed of my wishes, Linda gave me some advice.

She thought that first I would collect an interesting group of feminist artists, investigate the processes and methods they used to produce the artwork, and then see if this fitted into an anthropological framework. Also I need to understand about anthropological research methods, there are many research methods that are interdisciplinary and the practice of artists may create something, some new methods. And those may also be forms of data collection – gathering information from people. Use the collected data to create new works.

Then Linda gave me the example of a feminist collective Guerrilla Girls, whose famous poster ‘Do women have to be naked to enter museums?’ This work collected data from the galleries and then created the poster.

Finally Linda said that many artworks are created by collecting data on social events, which is the most common method, data collection, information gathering, etc.

After the tutorial I collated the content and realised that my ideas were too broad and I might need to think further.
