Bill & Ted’s excellent adventure
Whilst watching this film at the weekend with my family, I realised how well it fits into the theme of week 6 and 7 of the IDEL course. The idea of a fluid learning space is portrayed in its most hyperbolic form: travelling in space and time. The idea that our learning space is fluid has different elements to it (Bayne et al. 2014) and two of these elements are clearly depicted out in the film: the fluidity of the learning environment and perhaps, more obviously, the travelling, in this case in space and time.
I like the fact that the film concerns itself with space in the different sense: outer space. Although the idea of travelling in time to gain knowledge needed to pass a school year, as in the film, could be considered a short cut rather than actual education, it still stimulates learning, both for the main characters and the rest of the students.
I have added a link to the trailer below:
Bayne, S., Gallagher, M.S., & Lamb, J. (2014). Being ‘at’ university: the social topologies of distance students. Higher Education, 67(5), pp. 569-583.
An excellent choice! There’s definitely the intention to form their learning spaces to cram for the test but Bill & Ted (as well as the historical characters) do get an education (as an expansion of their realm of the possible). The time travelling phone box is good example of a fluid space for learning 🙂
