The Three Artists I have selected to study are Charles Sheeler , Robert Rauchenberg and Shinoda Toko.

Charles Sheeler

New York No 1

The Web

Wind, Sea and Sail

Charles Sheeler explored the relationships between photography, film, and more traditional media such as painting and drawing with more rigor and intellectual discipline than perhaps any other artist of his generation. As in a well-conceived scientific experiment, Sheeler used his own photographs and film stills as the basis for paintings and drawings, thus crystallizing the differences and similarities between them. He Works in one medium manage to function as independent objects while also being inextricably linked to works in other media.

Robert Rauchenberg

Test stone 6

Cardbird VI

Stunt Man 1

Rauschenberg is well known for his Combination between different media and collaging, this is what I found really interesting about his work.  How the play of different media can add depth and a 3D element to his artwork.

Shinoda Toko

Reminiscence

Jeunesse

Crystalline

Toko Shinoda is a Japanese artist known for sumi ink paintings and prints that blend traditional calligraphy with Modern abstraction.  The lightness and elegance to her artwork combined with this Modern abstraction is what i found really beautiful about her work.

Model 4801

Model 4801 was designed in 1963 and manufactured 1964-70. The chair was designed by joe Cesare Colombo.  The smooth glossy surface and bright colour makes the chair look as if it is made from plastic but it is actually made of Plywood. The chair was formed from three bent and pressed plywood elements which were slotted together using rubber spacers.  The chair is then painted with orange polyester varnish during a highly industrialised process which is done using the combination of a catalyst and a pigmented polyester which mix at the nozzle. The chair is then buffed when dry.
