Visit to National Museum of Scotland

This is a piece of work by Bianca Mosca, it is made by rayon, and there are some slogans printed on the cloth in a very formative arrangement.

This cloth remains me about a type of clothes in ancient china which is called “水田衣”(水田:Paddy field)/“百衲衣”(百衲:hundreds in one)

水田衣

In our traditional culture in China, people used to think others old, used clothes isn’t good, because it connotes bad luck, and new things mains good luck(a new start). But the 水田衣 is an exception.

The narrative of the clothes reversed by adding a little change to the cloth.

The 水田衣 is made by patch pieces of cloths, usually cut into squares from old clothes, into new clothes.

It is originated in Tang dynasty, when monks advocate frugality, so they used cloth from old clothes to remake new ones.

But as it develops, the way of making this 水田衣 becomes a traditional culture, especially for children. Parents asked there friends, neighbors for old used clothes to get blessings form them, and to get the good luck form the people originally own the clothes.

This process is like breaking the narrative of old used clothes, and generates a new narrative by patch those up.

I think it is an interesting thing when slight changes add to completely twist the meaning of a thing.
