Bio

Thomas Cyrill Demand (born 1964) is a German sculptor and photographer. He currently lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles, and teaches at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg.

Demand is known for making photographs of three-dimensional models that look like real images of rooms and other spaces, often sites loaded with social and political meanings. He thus describes himself not as a photographer, but as a conceptual artist for whom photography is an intrinsic part of his creative process.

Poll, 2001

this piece of work is galvanized by the Florida recount of balance in the US presidential election of 2000. he used just three weeks to finish this work after working day and night.

He talked about his favorite part of POLL is the paper on the desk, because he think it’s interesting to see that he uses paper as a representative of a paper. I liked the idea of making a piece of work which actually means itself.

In his work, he uses raw card board with out painting on it to create these sculptures, which made me think of how different materials affects the narrative of the whole work, so I decided to experiment on this by using different materials to build a same sculpture.
