From what our experts can tell, raves took place in dark and safe spaces, such as underground ‘venues’ and caves, presumed to be temples. This theory is supported by the presence of rave paintings and rave art, an early example of which you can see here. These wall paintings have been discovered in many temples across the uk.

Physical versions of these cave paintings have also been discovered. Catalogued by our team as artEfacts, these scattered and presumably discarded tokens have been found on the cave floors as seen here.

Evidence suggests that they may be a type of token or offering, functioning as part of the gift economy of the era, possibly exchanged for hugs.
